The Washington Commanders just completed a deal for the “Option to Buy” 200 acres of land in Prince Williams County, VA for $100 million as of last week. (1st reported by John Keim-ESPN). No transaction is finalized yet but, this move gives the Commanders the ability to buy a large chunk of land in one of their desired locations at their convenienc.
This news serves to further solidify the thinking that the team’s preference for the new stadium site would fall in Woodbridge, VA. The purchasing of land by the team is a significant step in a very long process towards a new stadium. While this move is significant, it doesn’t preclude the team from buying land at other proposed sites. All their options in (MD, VA, DC) remain open at this point. The potential Virginia sites would be located off or near I-95, a main throughfare of transportation within the state.
Not only are the Commanders looking for a new place to call home, but they are also looking to create a Full-Service Entertainment Venue. They want a stadium site that has; shops, restaurants, a music venue and hotels. One of the main benefits of this type of venue is that it has the ability to be a year-round profit center for the team that can host various types of events. This follows suit with most of the newer stadiums in the NFL that have created similar experiences for their fans. With the team dealing with waning attendance numbers and a dwindling fanbase its extremely important for the organization to create the best possible fan experience to retain and attract potential fans.
We are still a long way from any definitive decision about the new stadium but today may have provided some clarity on which path the team may choose.
Where do you want the new stadium to be…….?
