The Commanders still have a lot to figure out this training camp and there are some big positions still up for grabs.
Let‘s start with the defense and what I ultimately think it will look like (A.K.A. My Guess).
Rivera has been pushing the concept of 2-LB sets in conjunction with a 3-Safety look otherwise known as the “Buffalo Nickel”. Per Rivera’s own words the Commanders ran this 3-Safety look 53% of the time in 2021. That is very significant and means we will see a lot of that defense moving forward. With that being said. Here is what I expect a possible starting defense to look like:
Starters in Bold, backups in (“”””)
Defensive Line:
RDE: Chase Young (Ofe Obada, William Bradley-King)
DT: Jonathan Allen (Daniel Wise)
DT: Daron Payne (PhiDarian Mathis)
LDE: Montez Sweat (James Smith-Williams, Shaka Toney)
Linebackers:
MLB: Cole Holcomb (David Mayo)
WLB: Jamin Davis (Khaleke Hudson)
Cornerbacks:
RCB: Kendall Fuller (Corn Elder)
LCB: William Jackson III (Ben St. Juste)
Slot CB: Christian Holmes (Danny Johnson)
Safeties:
FS: Bobby McCain (Jeremy Reaves)
SS: Kamren Curl (Percy Butler)
Buffalo Nickel: Darrick Forest (Troy Apke)
This is shaping up to be an exciting training camp for the Commanders with many position battles and a lot of competition across the board.
