A look at the quarterback by committee performance against the Carolina Panthers
The good
Jayden Daniels had a big run to start things off but an awkward tumble at the end of it ended his day after one series. Daniels went 2 for 2 for 6 yards passing and added 50 yards on the ground. The best news to come of this was that he avoided a serious injury.
In his stead, backup Marcus Mariota put up solid numbers, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He added 34 rushing yards against a hapless and helpless Panthers defense.
Mariota hit seven different receivers and the offense didn’t miss a beat without Jayden Daniels. Credit Mariota and Kliff Kingsbury for keeping things rolling.
The not so good
When you have a running quarterback, injuries are always going to be a concern. Jayden is the future of the franchise and his legs are a big part of that, but a balance must be struck to keep him available.
The verdict
Marcus Mariota proved himself to be a capable backup for this offense. His skill set is similar enough to Daniels’ that Kliff Kingsbury didn’t have to change things up. That bodes well for the Commanders in the event that Jayden has to miss some time.
