Why so defensive? Week 6 @ Baltimore

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it—the defense will get cooked next week.” That’s how I ended last week’s article, and I was proven correct. The defense didn’t give up forty, but that doesn’t mean the Ravens didn’t have their way with the unit. The Commanders’ defense was shaky at best entering the year, and now injuries are starting to pile up. They’ll be without John Allen for the rest of the year, and Dorrance Armstrong is out again this week.

The Good:

They forced a turnover, and the coverage wasn’t terrible (it was just weak compared to Baltimore’s offense).

The Bad:

Impact players were significantly underwhelming against the Ravens, and the team continues to get destroyed in the running game. Yes, Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are cheat codes, but the team has proven to be highly suspect against the run.

Two Up 👍👍

Mikey Sanristil (PFF Grade - 75.0):

The rookie secured a turnover—maybe not super impactful for this game, but it’s something that others in the secondary have consistently failed to do.

Johnny Newton (PFF Grade - 37.5):

The rookie needs to play much better. This section is more a nod to his potential than to his actual performance against the Ravens.

Two Down 👎👎

Frankie Luvu (PFF Grade - 46.1):

If you’re going to be a leader and the heart of the defense, you can’t go an entire game without being noticed.

Benjamin St-Juste (PFF Grade - 48.8):

I have to include BSJ here. Even if he doesn’t deserve all the criticism, he was involved in a lot of the big plays that were given up.

The Carolina Panthers are a threat to this defense this week. They may not score 30, but they will have success because this 2024 Washington defense cannot be fully trusted.
